Performance

The E-500 features a 1000W brushless rear hub motor, and the disparity in power is instantly felt when compared to the less powerful 500W or 750W systems. The acceleration after a full stop is assertive and in control. The throttle is also handled by a strong, steady torque as opposed to a sudden burst when the throttle is engaged.

When I was on flat land, I always managed to reach the speed of about 28 mph. I could also hit up to 32 mph on certain patches. The motor is also able to sustain momentum especially when the vehicle is cruising at higher PAS levels.

The E-500 has three modes of riding:

  • Pedal Assist Mode (5 levels)
  • Full Throttle Mode
  • Manual Pedal Mode

Although the system employs a cadence-based assist system as opposed to a torque sensor, pedal engagement has predictability and is smooth enough to ride in the city and on mixed surfaces. When the pedaling process is initiated, the motor assistance will go on without much lag.

A Shimano 7-speed drive system is added to improve the variety in performance. Gear changes are instant and smooth. I used lower gearing combined with motor assistance in climbing moderate slopes so that my cadence was not overly rapid.

Range

The Askmy E-500 has a lithium-ion battery, a 48V 15Ah unit, into the frame. This battery is compatible with the requirements of a 1000W motor, whereas its real-life range is practical. But that’s the case with every battery, so can’t complain.

In my testing of the range,

  • Riding the throttle heavy and high PAS gave around 20 miles.
  • Moderate PAS levels ranged up to 35 miles range.
  • Mixed riding gave 26.8 miles on a single charge.

Keep in mind that range can be extended based on your riding style. It varies based on:

  • Rider weight
  • Terrain gradient
  • Average speed
  • Wind conditions
  • Frequency of throttle use

The battery can be removed, and it is lockable, which is highly convenient in daily life. It offers a significant advantage for apartment residents or commuters. Time of charging is between 6 to 7 hours to full charge.

One thing I liked is that the weight is distributed evenly through the positioning of the battery in the main frame triangle. Such a centralized location enhances the stability of handling as opposed to rear-mounted systems.

Capability

The bike has a dual suspension that incorporates a front suspension fork and a rear shock absorber. The duo achieves a substantial comfort level over city potholes and moderate trail conditions. Although this is not a premium adjustable suspension, it does a good job in its vibration dampening and lessening the fatigue in the rider.

I used the bike on both city roads, park trails and mixed surface that was uneven. The E-500 was able to stay calm and have traction in every setting.

However, the greatest contributor to ride confidence is the 20 x 4.0 all-terrain fat tire set up. These huge tires are very effective in raising traction and stability, and are perfect for:

  • Loose gravel
  • Uneven pavement
  • Light dirt trails
  • Mild sand patches

The broad tire profile enhances grip and at the same time smoothens out small irregularities on the surface.

Safety

The E-500 has front and rear mechanic disc brakes. In the controlled downhill tests and when there was sudden stop conditions, braking performance was consistent and predictable. These mechanical discs give sufficient stopping force, but not as good as hydraulic systems, which do offer finer modulation. Brake operation is solid and I did not experience any glitches.

For visibility and road presence, the bike has a/an:

  • Integrated LED headlight
  • Rear tail light
  • Reflectors
  • Electric horn

The headlight LED will give enough light on night commutes on evenings, and the rear light also activates on braking.

Ride Quality

I loved the ride quality of the bike in my testing. The fat tires, dual-suspension and upright geometry ensure a very stable and forgiving ride. Micro-vibrations are suppressed, and this makes the rides less tiring when they are longer.

The saddle has sufficient padding and ergonomics. I did not find it very uncomfortable during long testing. Positioning of handlebars also helps to assume a natural posture, which reduces the strain on the wrist and lower back.

The LCD display is centrally placed. It informs riders about all the necessary ride metrics, which include:

  • Current speed
  • Battery level
  • PAS level
  • Trip distance

There are several assist levels, so that the rider can decide between efficient cruising or high-output acceleration.

Design

The E-500 is composed of carbon steel frame that is constructed to be structurally sound. Although the overall weight is higher than the bikes made of aluminum, steel improves the long-term strength and resistance to impacts.

The frame is strong enough to support riders up to around 330 lbs and is solid and confidence-inspiring in heavier load scenarios. The weight of the bike is about 36.6kg (around 80 lbs), this is similar to the dual-suspension fat-tire e-bikes in this category.

Design elements include:

  • Integrated battery housing
  • Clean cable management
  • Compact 20-inch wheelbase
  • Aggressive fat-tire stance
  • Plastic fenders
  • Integrated LED lighting
  • Kickstand
  • Electric horn
