Cycrown CycRun

$499 (Amazon)

Cycrown is making waves in the ebike market with its stellar lineup of affordable electric bikes that come with all the features one may want in their ride at highly competitive prices. I have planned to review a couple of bikes from the brand, starting with the CycRun – which I believe is their most promising model. Not because it’s some extra-ordinary ebike… but because it’s an ebike available at an extraordinarily low price tag!

The CycRun is a dual suspension fat tire, moped-styled e-bike that impressively balances comfort and affordability. Despite its super-budget price tag of just $499, the CycRun is loaded with all the features, ranging from dual lights and turn indicators to fenders and an electric horn. Its robust build and thoughtful design make it suitable for a variety of terrains. The CycRun is not just an affordable option; it’s a well-rounded e-bike that delivers it all.

Performance Review

The Cycrown CycRun is equipped with a 750-watt brushless motor. Riders have the option to use pure electric mode using a twist throttle or to fine-tune their ride with five levels of pedal assist or to ride like a manual bike. This flexibility allows users to customize their riding experience based on their preferences and the demands of the terrain. The bike features a cadence sensor, which means there might be a slight delay in power engagement.

Performance Summary

Top Speed
20 mph
15.6 miles
Acceleration (0 to 20 mph)
19 seconds
Braking Distance (20 to 0 mph)
*to be tested

The Cycrown CycRun e-bike showed rather sluggish acceleration during testing, reaching 20 mph in around 19 seconds on a flat, smooth pavement under average wind conditions. It’s because of its small 374Wh battery that simply cannot motivate the 750W motor the way you’d like it to. However, given the bike’s weight of 76.7 pounds and its budget-friendly price, I really didn’t expect much performance from it. I mean don’t expect premium performance from a bike that costs less than $500.

Top Speed

The CycRun is designed with a pre-set maximum speed of 20 mph to comply with Class 2 e-bike regulations. This speed is generally sufficient for various riding needs.. but don’t expect a super-thrilling ride from this bike. Don’t forget that this is a sub-$500 bike!

The Cycrown CycRun features a full suspension system to allow for off-roading. Suspension of this bike is an area where I could find no cost-cutting measures. The front suspension uses a hydraulic fork, while the rear employs an oil-spring shock. Both of these work together to ensure a cushioned and comfortable ride on diverse terrains. In addition to this dual suspension setup, you also have fat tires and the large saddle to ensure a plush experience on beaten paths and urban potholes.

Ride Quality

Ride quality is probably the strongest area of the Cycrown CycRun. The bike is admirable in terms of handling and steering. While the cadence sensor may lack the responsiveness of higher-end models, it’s a minor trade-off given the bike’s budget-friendly price. The saddle is particularly noteworthy for its comfort, remaining plush even after extended use.

Moreover, the bike’s balanced weight distribution ensures stability across various terrains. The frame geometry and riding posture are well-designed, providing a comfortable experience. The ride quality is further enhanced by its 4″ fat tires and dual suspension system – which work together to absorb shocks and minimize discomfort from bumps and uneven surfaces..

Hill Climb

The CycRun didn’t show any remarkable performance on hills, again due to its small battery. It managed to ascend less steep hills… but at steeper gradients, riding this bike was somewhat of a challenge, especially when relying solely on the throttle. It could only negotiate steep gradients when you put in a lot of pedal power as well. Still, it performed well for a super-budget ride.

The Cycrown CycRun is equipped with 160mm mechanical brakes. While I haven’t conducted a detailed brake test yet, my initial impressions of the bike’s braking performance are positive. Given the bike’s speed capability and its price tag, these brakes are sufficient… despite all its weight and potential off-road usage.

The CycRun has a 36V 10.4Ah (374.4Wh) Lithium-ion battery, which is obviously way too small for all practical purposes. In my testing, I managed to cover just around 15.6 miles using a combination of throttle and PAS 5. This included navigating diverse surfaces, from flat roads to moderate hills. This low range is also due to the bike’s 750W nominal power output and its substantial weight. With its current battery, the bike is only good for short runs… Otherwise, if you want to undertake longer adventures, you might want to upgrade to a bigger battery.

The CycRun is outfitted with a seven-speed Shimano drivetrain – a common choice among budget electric bikes. During testing, I found gear shifting to be smooth across various speeds and terrains. Overall, the Shimano transmission provides adequate performance for most riding conditions, including off-roading.
