Today, I’ll be reviewing the brand’s Z8 e-bike. It is a dual suspension fat tire moped-styled e-bike that impresses riders with its extensive features despite an affordable price tag. Surprisingly, its performance rivals that of bikes costing twice as much – all thanks to a powerful motor propelling the rear wheel. But the bike offers a lot more than just raw power.

Performance Review

The Riding’times Z8 features a 750-watt brushless motor that peaks at 1500 watts and provides a robust riding experience, suitable for various terrains. The bike offers 3 riding modes: a pure electric mode, a 5-level pedal-assist mode, and a regular cycling mode. The pedal-assist uses a cadence sensor, so lacks the immediate responsiveness of the torque sensors found in higher-end models.

Acceleration

Riding’times advertises the Z8 as a 1500W peak e-bike, which is a bit misleading. Remember that peak power is always for a short burst, and you might want to look for nominal power output – that’s the output offered by the motor at a continuous rate – while making your buying decision. 

Having said so, the Z8 features a 750W nominal rear motor that peaks at 1500W. The bike understandably showed impressive acceleration during testing, reaching a speed of 20 mph in just 13 seconds. This test was conducted on a flat, smooth asphalt surface under average wind conditions. Given the 78.3-pound weight of the bike, this level of performance is quite commendable.

Top Speed

The Riding’times Z8 has a pre-set maximum speed of 28 mph to comply with Class 3 regulations, which is more than sufficient for most needs. I did not unlock the bike to see how fast it can go in an unlocked state… but if I do, I’ll surely update the blog to let you folks know. However, given the bike’s weight and price, 28 mph is great too. I mean going beyond this speed is not just illegal, but also quite dangerous.

Ride Quality

Like many moped-style e-bikes, the Riding’times Z8 delivers a comfortable riding experience. Its balanced weight distribution ensures stability across various tracks, while the frame geometry and riding posture offer decent ergonomics. The ride is notably cushioned, thanks to its 4″ fat tires, dual suspension system, and the large plush saddle. These components work harmoniously to minimize jerkiness and discomfort from bumps and surface irregularities.

In terms of handling, the Z8 performs admirably, providing responsive steering. While the cadence sensor may not be as responsive as in higher-end models, this is understandable given its budget-friendly price point. Moreover, the slight lag is unlikely to be noticeable for most riders. All in all, I had a comfortable and controlled ride throughout my testing.

Transmission

The Riding’times Z8 comes with a seven-speed Shimano Tourney transmission, which is a standard feature for many budget electric bikes. Shifting between gears was smooth, but at higher speeds, I noticed some ghost pedaling (which is a common issue with 7-speed bikes). However, this too is manageable as long as you stay below 25 mph. Alternatively, you can use throttle to avoid pedaling at all.

Range

The Riding’times Z8 is equipped with a 48V 15.6Ah (748.8Wh) Lithium-ion battery. During testing, I managed to cover a distance of 25.7 miles using a combination of throttle and PAS 5. This test included traversing flat road stretches as well as some mildly hilly terrain. Given the bike’s 750W nominal power output, substantial weight, and affordable price tag, this range is fairly reasonable.

Braking

The Riding’times Z8 comes with dual mechanical brakes with cut-off electric sensors designed to promptly halt the motor when brake levers are engaged. Although I haven’t conducted a brake-distance test yet, my initial impressions of the bike’s braking performance are positive. Still, I’d have preferred hydraulic brakes instead of mechanical brakes, considering the bike’s speed, its massive weight, and off-road use. However, the brand had to cut corners somewhere, and I believe it’s one of the areas where it did so.

Hill Climb

During testing on various terrains, the Riding’times Z8 exhibited reasonable strength when tackling inclines. It powered up most hills effectively, but I encountered some challenges on gradients steeper than 20 degrees when relying solely on the throttle. The brand claims the bike to be able to tackle upto 35 degrees of gradient… but I don’t think that would be easy for an average weight rider. All in all, the Z8’s hill climbing performance is quite good… better than even Engwe’s M20… but not as good as I experienced with RAEV’s Bullet GT.

Suspension

The Riding’times Z8 comes with a full suspension system. This combo of front and rear suspension system enables a great degree of off-roading capability. Fortunately, the brand has not implemented any cost-cutting measures in this area. I particularly liked the rear dual shocks – they are more than just looks! And when complemented with 4” fat tires and the plush saddle, the ride is as cushioned as it can get.

The Riding’times Z8 has a price tag of $899, which is remarkable considering the combination of performance, comfort, and features offered by this bike. The frame of the Z8 is constructed from high-strength carbon steel, which unfortunately contributes to a net weight of 78.3 lbs. The bike is rated for a payload of 300 lbs. With typical moped styling, the frame features a minimalist design complemented by a generously sized saddle… and a large moto-style front lamp. Additionally, dual fenders and the neatly organized wiring also complement the bike’s looks.

Battery

The Riding’times Z8 is outfitted with a high-capacity 48V 15.6Ah (748.8Wh) Lithium-ion battery. Its lockable and removable design enhances convenience, enabling users to effortlessly charge or replace the battery as required. Charging the battery takes around 6-8 hours using a standard 2A charger. The battery is mounted almost in the center of the bike for a balanced weight distribution.

LCD

The Z8 is equipped with a compact and color backlit LCD display designed for optimal visibility in various lighting conditions. The LCD enables riders to effortlessly monitor their speed, distance traveled, battery status, and more ride metrics in real time. 

Lights

The Z8 boasts a motorcycle-styled front lamp, which effectively illuminates the rider’s path during nighttime rides. Complementing this, a rear light enhances safety by increasing the bike’s visibility to others on the road. The rear light incorporates a brake light function, automatically activating when brakes are applied to alert nearby road users of the rider’s deceleration or stopping actions. The bike also has turn signals incorporated in the rear light.

Tires

The Riding’times Z8 e-bike comes equipped with 20×4-inch fat tires sporting a knobby tread design. These tires are engineered to provide optimal grip and exceptional traction across various terrains, ensuring stability and control for riders. They also excel in cushioning the ride, effectively absorbing impacts and minimizing vibrations on both bumpy streets and off-road trails. In addition to the dual lights, the Z8 also has a number of pedal and wheel reflectors to increase visibility on road.
