Performance Review

The Engwe L20 is a great choice for your daily commute because it can reach a top speed of 25 mph when using pedal assist. It comes with a stylish-looking front rack for added storage and a step-thru overall design. However, if you live in some areas like Europe, you may not be able to access the same speed or use the throttle. But don’t worry, there is a way to unlock and access it if needed.

I was able to cover 40 miles of range using pedal assist. However, I have some concerns because the claimed range of the brand is supposed to be 90 miles. Although the actual range can vary depending on the rider and other factors.

When it comes to going uphill, the half-twist throttle may not be very fast, but it gives me a steady and reliable performance, while the pedal assist is dependable. The Engwe L20 has a nominal motor power of 750W and a peak power of 960W. With a motor torque of 50Nm, it delivers a smooth ride throughout my experience.

Top Speed

The Engwe L20 has a top speed of 25mph, which is quite good. In certain areas like Europe where the maximum speed limit for e-bikes is set at 15mph, you may need to make adjustments to access the full motor power and enable the top speed.

Acceleration

The Engwe L20 gives a slow and smooth acceleration that feels okay during the ride. It may not be super fast, but it provides a stable experience. With a torque of 50Nm, it delivers a steady and reliable performance.

Hill Climb

The Engwe L20 proved to be reliable when it came to handling inclines. I really like how well this bike performed on uphill climbs. I was able to ride up a 20-degree incline slowly but without any issues. 

The pedal assist feature excelled in handling the inclines with ease.

Range

The Engwe L20 comes with a dependable battery capacity of 48V 13Ah, which is great for long rides. I was able to achieve a range of 40 miles using mostly pedal assist on a combination of mid-terrain and asphalt surfaces.

Ride Quality

The Engwe L20 provides a smooth and stable ride overall. The saddle is soft, and the front suspension handles mid-level terrain okay. I recommend using the pedal assist mode as manual pedaling can be quite challenging.

The steering of the Engwe L20 is nimble and agile, allowing for easy maneuverability.

The power delivery of this e-bike is responsive, and the throttle gets the job done efficiently. You can rely on the Engwe L20 to provide the necessary power when needed.

When it comes to cornering, the 20×4″ tires perform well, offering good traction and stability during turns. The Engwe L20 can handle weights up to 264 lbs. You don’t need to worry if you have additional items or cargo with you, also a plus with the additional front basket!

I like the BMX look of the handlebar, which adds a unique touch to the bike’s style. The saddle can be folded when you need to remove the battery. These small details contribute to the overall convenience and user-friendly design of the Engwe L20.

Braking

The Engwe L20 is equipped with mechanical disc brakes for reliable stopping power. The diameter of the brake rotors is 160mm, although I wish it were 180mm as a standard size for enhanced braking performance.

The mechanical disc brake performs well since the bike is not extremely fast in terms of speed. However, I did notice that the brakes can be quite noisy when applied with full force. It’s something to be aware of, but it doesn’t significantly affect the overall braking performance of the Engwe L20.

Suspension

The Engwe L20 features a front suspension only, which is a typical Engwe design. The front fork has a travel of 1 ½ inches, providing a decent level of suspension for mid-terrain rides. It is also adjustable and lockable, allowing you to customize the suspension according to your preference.

The suspension feels quite good, particularly when riding on mid-terrain surfaces but I wouldn’t recommend it riding on full off-road.

The bike also has a seat post suspension. This adds an extra layer of comfort, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable ride. The saddle itself is super comfy, thanks to the soft shock absorber seat. You can expect a comfortable seating experience even during longer rides or on uneven surfaces.

Transmission

The Engwe L20 is equipped with a 7-speed Shimano transmission. Shifting gears on this bike is easy and smooth, allowing for seamless transitions between gears.

When in the lowest gear, I noticed that the chain can sometimes rub against the tires. This rubbing can potentially damage the tires if not addressed. I advise you to check and adjust the chain clearance to ensure it is properly aligned and does not interfere with the tires.

The Engwe L20 features an aluminum alloy frame, which provides a balance of strength and good construction. The bike itself weighs 77 lbs, not so heavy but not so light.

Styling

The Engwe L20 has a stylish design that I really like. It’s a step-thru bike, which makes it easy for me to mount and dismount. The front basket adds a cargo bike look, which is a nice touch. As for the wiring, most of it is internal, giving the bike a clean and tidy appearance.

There are some external wires in the front, but they are done nicely and don’t detract from the overall look. I really love the color options available: flamingo pink, snow white, onyx black, and avocado green, which I really like, all the colors give a premium feel to the bike.

Battery Pack

The Engwe L20 comes with a removable and lockable battery pack, which is convenient for charging and security. The battery pack takes approximately 6 to 7 hours to fully charge. I appreciate the way the battery is attached—it ensures that I can’t ride the bike when it’s not turned on, adding an extra layer of safety. Once turned on, the key itself cannot be unplugged. Removing the battery is a cool process as well: I just need to fold the saddle and then pull the battery from the bike. It’s a user-friendly and efficient design.

LCD

The Engwe L20 features a basic black-and-white LCD display. Although the display is quite small, it is clear and easy to read. It is a backlit display, which means it remains visible even in daylight. Even under direct sunlight, I can see everything on the display without any difficulty.

The tires have a knobby tread pattern, which provides excellent traction and stability, especially when riding on rough or uneven surfaces.
