Heybike stands out as a prominent budget ebike brand available at Amazon. No matter if you want a ride for smooth city roads or crave the excitement of off-road adventures, Heybike offers a wide range of exceptionally affordable and quality ebikes. While I like plenty of bikes from their impressive lineup, the Heybike Race Max with its super affordable price tag has literally taken things to the next level.

Yes, the Race Max might not rival high-end eMTBs… but its features such as Shimano-7s transmission, lockable front suspension fork, 27.5″ knobby mountain tires make it evident that you won’t find a practical realistic deal at this price tag. The best part is that despite the affordable price, the Race Max does not compromise on functionality or even build quality. Let’s have a detailed look at what this electric bike offers.

Performance Review

The Heybike Race Max electric bike is equipped with a rear hub motor rated at 500 watts. It offers three operating modes – a regular cycling mode, a pedal-assist mode, and a throttle or full electric mode. The motor is backed by a 48-volt power source and works with a cadence sensor to detect pedal input.

Performance Summary

Top Speed
21.5 mph
Range
23.2 miles
Acceleration (0 to 20 mph)
16-17 seconds
Braking Distance (20 to 0 mph)
*to be tested

Acceleration

When I tested the Heybike Race Max along a level urban pathway, I was able to reach 20mph in around 16-17 seconds. This acceleration, while not lightning-fast, is quite suitable for a 500W ebike and exceptionally good for an e-bike priced below $500. Once I hit the initial burst of speed, the bike maintained a steady pace throughout the ride. In terms of acceleration, I found the performance of the Heybike Race Max to be nearly identical to that of the Jasion EB5.

Top Speed

The Heybike Race Max falls under the Class 2 e-bike category, so it can hit a maximum speed of 20mph. While this top speed is suitable for most situations, I couldn’t resist unlocking it, as I often do. Under typical wind conditions on a smooth road, I was able to reach a speed of 21.5mph during testing. It’s a respectable performance considering the 500W hub motor.

Hill Climb

The Heybike Race Max bike displayed reasonable hill-climbing capability. While it wasn’t effortless to ascend the majority of hills I tackled with the Heybike Race Max, its gear system somewhat enhanced the torque. In case you want a tough hill climber, the  RAEV Bullet GT still stands as the most powerful ebike for hill climbing that I have so far tested.

Ride Quality

Regardless of its budget-friendly price, the Heybike Race Max has paid adequate attention to rider comfort. The bike offers a comfortable ride posture, with an adjustable saddle height to facilitate riders of various heights. Due to its lightweight construction, it provides good steering and handling. While the power delivery from the cadence sensor might not be extremely responsive, it is reasonably satisfactory in regards to the price point. Additionally, the large tires and front suspension effectively absorb impact from bumps and uneven road surfaces.

Range

Equipped with a 48V 12.5Ah Lithium-ion battery, the Heybike Race Max offers a total energy content of 600Wh. During my testing, I managed to cover approximately 23.2 miles utilizing both the throttle mode and pedal-assist mode. The path I traveled encompassed mainly flat terrain, with a few inclines. Considering the 500W power generated nominally and the bike’s price point, the range is reasonably good.

But if you want to purchase an e-bike with exceptional range, the Aniioki A8 Pro Max and the Bandit X-Trail Pro are noteworthy options. Both of these electric bikes feature substantial batteries with long-lasting performance.

Braking

The Heybike Race Max electric bike is equipped with a pair of mechanical disc brakes. While I haven’t had the opportunity to carry a comprehensive brake test, I found the braking performance satisfactory. Of course, hydraulic brakes are always superior, but given the bike’s top speed, they are fine. Also, it’s worth noting that at this price point, you often encounter brakes operated by rim or drum, as seen on models like those from Hurley.

Transmission

The Heybike Race Max has a 7-speed gear system from Shimano. Thanks to this transmission, the bike offers a seamless transition between gears. The gear helps in  high-speed travel and also perform well on uphill slopes.

Suspension

The Heybike Race Max e-bike is equipped with a front suspension fork, which can be locked, allowing you to adapt it to different terrains and your personal preference. If you’re interested in dual suspension, there are several options available as well. Among economical e-bikes, I found the suspension on the Engwe Engine X to be particularly appealing.
