Mokwheel is a relatively new brand, but the people behind it have been active in the electric mobility industry since 2014. Mokwheel founders have previously achieved notable success in the industry with their hoverboards and electric scooters… and now they are all ready to nail the e-bike niche as well.

While all e-bikes offered by the brand are innovative in one way or another, the Basalt takes thinking out of the box to a new level. Marketed by the brand as a “Power Station E-Bike”, the Basalt comes optional with a 1000W inverter that you can connect with your bike’s battery to power everything from your devices to cooking appliances. You can also get the optional portable solar panels to charge the bike’s battery through the inverter in the middle of nowhere.

Even if you get the bike without these optional things, the Basalt is a great e-bike overall. It features a highly efficient torque-sensing powertrain backed by a large Samsung battery, before topping it with premium components (like Tektro hydraulic brakes, for instance). Plus, it comes equipped with handy accessories such as dual fenders, a bamboo-topped rear rack, and more. Let’s have a look at what else it offers.

Performance Review

The Mokwheel Basalt is propelled by a 750W brushless motor, which seamlessly integrates with a torque sensor, ensuring smooth and responsive acceleration. Now, having a torque sensor is a big deal. Powering the motor is a 48V 19.6Ah (941Wh) lithium battery sourced from Samsung. Riders have the option to ride in three modes: pedal (cycling), throttle, and electric assist. The assist mode offers five levels of assistance to let users adjust the motor output in accordance to riding conditions – for instance when scaling hills vs when riding on flat terrain.

With an impressive 90Nm of torque, the 750W brushless rear hub motor effortlessly propels the Basalt fat tire electric bike on both flats and hills. The motor’s performance is greatly enhanced by a torque sensor. The motor springs into action the moment you start pedaling, delivering seamless and consistent acceleration. Frankly, I wasn’t surprised by the smoothness, given the torque-sensing powertrain.

Unlike cadence-sensing e-bikes, there’s no awkward jerking or sudden surges of power. Even at lower assistance levels, you can effortlessly gain speed and maneuver through traffic with the Basalt’s agility. And when you need that extra push to accelerate swiftly, the Basalt responds with a robust and steady acceleration that propels you to your destination with ease.

Hill Climb

Before delving into the Mokwheel’s impressive performance on hills (spoiler alert: it excelled), let’s cover some e-biking fundamentals. When comparing an ebike with torque sensor to the one with cadence sensor, the difference in hill climbing capabilities is striking. The torque sensor instantly detects when you require more power and delivers it accordingly, whereas the cadence sensor merely gauges your pedaling speed and might not offer the same level of assistance on steep gradients.

This results in substantial torque and exceptional hill climbing prowess. And Mokwheel certainly lived up to expectations in this regard. Thanks to its robust 750W rear motor with a stellar torque output of 90Nm, conquering hills felt effortless – almost as if I were riding on level ground. 


As expected, the braking prowess of the Mokwheel Basalt was truly commendable… thanks to Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. Throughout my testing, the Basalt deccelerated in no time, though I have yet to distance its accurate braking distance. Generally speaking, the braking performance was consistent and reliable, perfectly in line with the bike’s weight, intended off-road usage, and overall speed capabilities.

Ride Quality

The Mokwheel delivers an exceptionally natural and intuitive riding experience, just what you can expect of any torque-sensing electric bike. Since the torque sensor continuously measures the pressure applied to the pedals and adjusts the motor’s power output accordingly, the Basalt delivers precise and responsive acceleration. 

The weight distribution is also stellar, resulting in stability and ease of handling on various terrains, be it flats, hills, or tight turns. In addition to the power delivery, I was also impressed by the level of comfort the bike offered. The saddle boasted an ergonomic design  and didn’t cause any discomfort even after hours of use. It means the bike is suitable for both short commutes  as well as long-distance rides. 

The Basalt’s front suspension and massive 26” fat tires also contributed to ride comfort by absorbing all shocks from the ride, and ensuring a smooth experience. The bike also features leather covering on handlebars to give you a nice, cozy feel.

Top Speed

The Mokwheel Basalt comes with a Class 2 sticker, but it is in fact a Class 3 electric bike, with a top speed capped at 28mph. The power cuts off automatically when you reach this speed, but it is done in a gradual and seamless manner, ensuring there’s no abrupt change. 


The Mokwheel Basalt features a Shimano Tourney 7S system. Shifting gears proved to be relatively smooth during my testing. However, given the Basalt’s intended use as a high-speed commuter-cum-off-roader, it would have been nice to see an 8-speed system incorporated. Also, because 7-speed transmission is often prone to ghost pedaling once you cross 25mph… and Basalt too was not immune to that.


When it comes to range, the efficiency of a torque sensor compared to a cadence sensor is truly remarkable. By detecting the force applied to the pedals in real-time, a torque sensor can provide power in a more nuanced manner, closely matching the rider’s effort without any energy losses. This enhanced efficiency translates to longer range per charge, a fact clearly demonstrated in the range testing of the Mokwheel. 

We were able to ride over 47 miles on PAS 5 on a flat road with minimal obstacles. Impressively, the bike still had a bit of battery remaining at the end of our trip. Sure, the range may vary depending on terrain and weather conditions as well as the load on the bike, I’m sure that the Mokwheel Basalt should meet the daily commuting needs of most individuals with ease.


Navigating rough terrains is where the Mokwheel Basalt truly stands out, thanks to its remarkable suspension. It has a front fork with 110mm of travel that can be adjusted with rebound control to suit varying terrain conditions… and allowing riders to fine-tune their ride according to their preferences. If you want more, you can opt for the optional seat post suspension for an even smoother experience, but given the 26×4” fat tires, you probably won’t be needing that.

You can load as much cargo as you want… or can even take a passenger with you.


The Basalt comes equipped with a 48V 19.6Ah (941Wh) lithium-ion battery with Samsung cells, known for their high energy density. The battery is neatly placed inside the downtube but is removable (and lockable) for convenient charging and replacement. The bike comes with a 3A fast charger that tops up the massive battery in around 7 hours.


Crafted to be sleek and compact, the integrated LED dashboard of the Mokwheel Basalt lets you effortlessly monitor your speed, distance traveled, battery level, and more ride parameters. While the dashboard ensures ease of reading in low-light conditions, its visibility is not perfect in daylight. This is an area I feel Mokwheel should address as soon as possible.


The Mokwheel Basalt comes equipped with dual fenders, serving as practical shields to shield you from splashes and dirt when traversing muddy or wet terrain. Additionally, it features a robust side kickstand for parking, an electric horn for alerting nearby road users, wheel reflectors for maximum visibility in the night, and a sturdy wooden-top rear rack for taking cargo or a passenger with you. Mokwheel also offers a number of great optional accessories to enhance your outdoor experience, most notably the 1000W inverter that I discussed before.


The Basalt electric bike comes with CHAOYANG 26×4.0″ fat tires featuring knobby tread to amplify grip and deliver exceptional traction across diverse terrains. Not only do these tires excel in providing stability and control, but they also contribute to a smoother ride by absorbing shocks and vibrations on bumpy hills and rugged off-road tracks. The tires also have a puncture-resistant liner for longevity and added peace of mind.


The Mokwheel Basalt prioritizes safety with its ultra-bright dual LED headlights that provide ample illumination to brighten your path and enhance visibility during nighttime rides.
