If you’re an avid e-bike enthusiast, you know that Engwe has made a name for itself in the budget-friendly e-bike category, offering reliable and affordable options for those looking to make the switch to electric bikes.

I had been eager to try out the Engine X electric bike after its release. Despite its heavy size, much like the Engine Pro, I was surprised by how light and stable it felt while riding and how much weight it could handle.

I was impressed by its performance and today I will provide a detailed review of the Engwe Engine X, highlighting its features and performance.

Performance Review

The Engwe Engine X is a good-performing e-bike that offers reliable performance and practicality. Its 250W motor and 48V 13Ah battery provide sufficient power for daily commutes or leisurely rides. While the top speed of 25km/h may not be impressive, it is still acceptable for most users. The throttle mode feature makes it easy to operate and control the bike.

The range of 60km is pretty decent, allowing riders to go on longer trips without worrying about running out of power.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at the performance tests conducted for each individual aspect.

Top Speed

I had the chance to test out the top speed of the Engwe Engine. It goes up to 25km/h as it is designed for the European market.

Acceleration

When I hopped on the Engwe Engine X, I have to admit, I was a bit worried about its weight of 31.6 kg. But once I started riding, I completely forgot about it. The 50Nm of torque was impressive and made for a great ride.

Range

The Engwe Engine X’s battery capacity is 48V 13Ah, which for me is a decent capacity that allows for a good amount of power to be drawn from it. During my test ride, I was able to cover a distance of up to 60km, which is an impressive range for an e-bike that’s on the heavier side.

I was particularly amazed by the bike’s range. But overall, I think lighter e-bikes with the same price rate can deliver a more extended range.

Ride Quality

The Engwe Engine X was versatile enough to handle different terrains, whether I was navigating through the streets of the city or going off-road. The ride was smooth, and the steering felt agile and nimble, allowing me to maneuver through tight spaces without worrying.

When it came to cornering, the Engwe Engine X handled it smoothly. The wide tires provided excellent grip, and I never had to worry about taking corners too fast.

In terms of weight distribution and ride stability, the Engwe Engine X was a good contender. The bike’s heavy weight gave it a stable feel, making it easier to handle on all terrain. I felt in control the entire time I was riding and never had any issues with the bike feeling unstable.

Tinyjpg

Braking

The Engwe Engine X has dual mechanical brakes that I found to be very effective in bringing the bike to a stop. However, I did notice that the diameter of the brake rotors is 160mm, which I would have preferred to be larger, probably 180mm to be exact, especially considering the wide tires.

The e-bike does have motor and power cut-off levers, which provide an extra level of safety during braking. These levers allow me for a smooth disengagement of the motor’s power.

Suspension

The Engwe Engine X has a full suspension setup, with a front suspension that unfortunately, as I’ve mentioned earlier, didn’t feel very effective even after adjusting the lock level. However, the rear suspension is standard for an e-bike and provides proper riding support.

Overall, I could say the suspension setup on this bike is decent, although the front suspension could use some improvement. On the other hand, the saddle was quite comfortable, with a soft and supportive feel that made longer rides much more pleasant.

Engwe Engine X Features

Frame

The Engwe Engine X is built with a sturdy aluminum alloy frame, which makes it quite heavy at 31.6kg. Despite its weight, I believe it actually contributes to its ability to bear loads of up to 150kg (330.7 lbs), which makes it ideal for transporting heavy items.

The rear rack also has a nice and steady load rating, a great addition for those needing extra storage.

The baggage rack was quite stable. It’s always nice to have the option to carry extra items on a bike, and I never had to worry about anything falling off or shifting around.

Price

The Engwe Engine X is a great value for its price of 1,299 euros. And if you’re a new buyer, you can also have a 2% discount available making it even more budget-friendly.

Given its good capabilities and specs, I believe this e-bike is a great investment for anyone looking for a high-performing and cost-effective mode of transportation, at least if you’re not looking for a fast one.

Portability

Once I fold it, I can easily carry it around without worrying about its weight. I think it will not be an issue to take it on a bus or put it in the trunk for travel.

Engwe Engine X is also foldable. Once folded, I found it easy to move around. It’s a great feature that adds to the bike’s overall convenience.

Tinyjpg

Styling

When it comes to the styling of the Engwe Engine X, I think it’s pretty good. The body construction really complements the wide tires and gives it a nice overall look.

As for the wiring, the bike does have some internal wiring, which is always a nice touch, but not all of it is internal. I did find it a bit bothersome that some of the wires are still on the outside, as they can become tangled when folding the bike. I hope Engwe could improve the bike in the future.

Tinyjpg

Battery Pack

The battery of the Engwe Engine X is both removable and lockable, which gives me peace of mind knowing that it’s secure when I leave it unattended.

When it comes to charging time, It takes around 4-5 hours from 0% to a full charge.

While this is not the fastest charging time in the market, it’s still acceptable and convenient for me not to worry while biking.

LCD

When it comes to the LCD of Engwe Engine X, I find it to be just the right size for the bike. The good thing is, it’s still visible even in bright daylight, and it’s also backlit for easy viewing at night.

Tires

The Engwe Engine X is a good option for all-terrain adventures, I ride it on rough roads and wet asphalt, and I could say Its 20” x 4” wide tires provide excellent traction and stability, allowing you to confidently tackle any surface.

Tinyjpg

Lights

The Engwe Engine X is equipped with a reliable front lamp that helps illuminate your way forward.

Additionally, it also features a brake light that provides added safety, especially during night rides.

Tinyjpg

Waterproofing

The Engwe Engine X can handle a bit of rain with an IP 2 rating. But it’s best not to ride it in heavy rain to avoid damage.

Warranty

The Engwe Engine X e-bike is backed by warranty, with 12-month coverage on critical components like the frame, front fork, handlebars, motor, and battery, and 3-month coverage for other parts. Also, the tires are covered for 1 month.

Additional Accessory

The Engwe Engine X comes fully equipped with several useful accessories, including one-piece wheels, and a baggage rack. It has some kind of dampening under its seat, maybe for a better seating position when riding, I don’t really feel it when riding.

However, the bike has a poorly fitted back fender. While it does provide some protection from road debris and water, it is not very secure and may wobble or shift during rides. I suggest you upgrade this if you’re thinking of getting one.

Engwe Engine X Alternatives & Competitors

If you want to compare options, here are two main alternatives for the Engwe Engine X in a similar budget and specs range.

Engwe Engine X vs Engwe Engine Pro

The Engwe Engine X and the Engwe Engine Pro are two models that are worth comparing side by side.

Let’s take a closer look at the Engwe Engine Pro. This model boasts a 750W motor and a 48V 16Ah battery that can cover a range of 100km. This makes it a better option if you plan to take longer rides, commute to work, or even use it for a weekend adventure. However, this added power and functionality do come at a higher price point of $1,499.

On the other hand, the Engwe Engine X is a great budget option that is more affordable at 1,299 euros. It comes with a 250W motor and a 48V 13Ah battery that can cover a range of 60km but has a slower speed of 25km/h compared to Engine Pro’s 38km/h. While this model may not have the same level of power and range as the Engwe Engine Pro, it’s still a solid choice for those who want to get into e-biking without spending too much. Like the Engwe Engine Pro, it also comes with dual suspension to make for a smoother ride. Engine X also provides a throttle mode, you just need to configure it.

It’s worth noting that there is a weight difference between these two models as well. The Engwe Engine Pro weighs 37.8kg, which is almost 6kg more than the Engwe Engine X’s weight of 31.6kg. While this may not be a huge difference, it’s worth considering if you plan on carrying your e-bike.

The decision of which model to choose depends on your specific needs and budget. If you’re looking for a more powerful electric bike that can handle longer rides, the Engwe Engine Pro may be the better option for you. However, if you’re on a budget, the Engwe Engine X is still a great alternative that can cover shorter distances with ease. Both models come with dual suspension, which makes for a comfortable ride, and it’s up to you to decide which features and price point fit your needs best.

Engwe Engine X vs Drvetion BT20

The Engwe Engine X offers a 250W motor, 48V 13Ah battery, 60km range, and dual suspension for a budget-friendly price of 1,299 euro, while the Drvetion BT20 has a more powerful 750W motor, but a smaller 48V 10Ah battery, 29.9km range, and only a single suspension for 1,399 USD. In my opinion, the choice between Engwe Engine X and Drvetion BT20 depends on individual preferences and usage. Engwe Engine X is suitable for smooth rides and moderate distances, whereas Drvetion BT20 offers more power but has a shorter range and less suspension.

Here’s a brief comparison of these three electric bikes.

Engwe Engine X Engwe Engine Pro Drvetion BT20
Motor 250W 750W 750W
Top Speed 25km/h 38km/h 42km/h
Battery 624Wh 768Wh 480Wh

Suspension Dual Dual Single
Price €1,299 $1,499 $1,399

Conclusion

I can say that the Engwe Engine X is a budget-friendly e-bike that offers an excellent range and a nice overall design. However, some users may find it quite heavy for an e-bike considering its 31.6kg weight, and as I mentioned…the back fender may not be fitted properly, I wish it can be improved.

While the overall wire management is decent, it’s worth noting that not all wires are internal. One potential concern is that the wires could become tangled when the bike is folded. Just make sure to fold the bike with care to prevent this issue.

The Engwe Engine X is a good option for those seeking an affordable and reliable e-bike. However, for those who are willing to spend more, the Engwe Engine Pro might be a better choice since most of its specs are better. The Engine Pro has a more powerful motor, better suspension, and longer battery life, making it a great option for those who want more advanced features.
